In the seventh century A.D., a man named Muhammad claimed to have been visited by the angel Gabriel. According to the story, the angel revealed to Muhammad the words of Allah, the one true God. Over time, Muhammad gained many followers, and Islam is the world's largest religion in the world today. Originally, most of the angelic revelations were passed down orally, or written on scattered items such as camel bones. However, as many of the leading muslims died in battle, many of these revelations were lost, and so muslims composed a book that is known today as the Qur'an (sometimes spelled Koran) to collect together the remaining teachings of Muhammad.
